Live Streaming 101

Welcome to Live Streaming 101.  There are so many different ways to get your live streaming set up, depending on the gear that is available. Working with the City of Surrey, we’ve put together this document outlining the different live streaming setups to match the equipment currently available to you.   Please reach out to us by email with questions and we’ll be happy to help you get your live stream going!

A. For Beginners with an iPhone or iPad

TECH REQUIREMENTS

  • iPhone/iPad (14)
  • Instrument (Guitar, Piano, etc) (7)
  • Headphones (9)

 HOW TO CONNECT

  1. Open Facebook. Go to the profile, page or group you’d like to Live Stream on.
  2. Click on     .
  3. Add a description
  4. Click “Start Live Video” and you’re on your way!
 
NOTE: If you have a PA System, you can also connect your microphone and instruments to it and play. Make sure that the volume of your amplified sound is not distorting through the internal mic of the iPhone or iPad.
 

B. For Beginners with a Computer

TECH REQUIREMENTS

  • Computer (1)
  • Instrument (Guitar, Piano, etc) (7)
  • Headphones (9)

HOW TO CONNECT

  • Go to Sound setup in System Preferences (MAC) / Control Panel (PC) and select internal microphone for input and headphones for output). 
  • If you are live streaming by yourself, go to your browser (Chrome is preferred over Safari) and open Facebook. Go to the profile, page or group you’d like to Live Stream on.
  • Click on   . Live Producer should open.   Under Live Video Setup, choose “Use Camera” and allow Facebook access to your camera and mic.  Facebook will recognize your audio system settings as your internal microphone.  
  • Select where and how you’d like to go Live.
  • Title your live video
  • Write a post. 
  • Click “Go Live” and you’re on your way!

NOTE: If you have a PA System, you can also connect your microphone and instruments to it and play. Make sure that the volume of your amplified sound is not distorting through the internal mic of the Computer.

 

C. For Intermediates With a Computer and an Analog Mixer

TECH REQUIREMENTS

  • Computer (1)

  • Mic Stand (5)
  • XLR cable (6)
  • Instrument (Guitar, Piano, etc) (7)
  • 1/4” cable (8)
  • Headphones (9)
  • 1/8” to 1/4” adapter (10)
  • 1/8” to 1/4” cable (can be created with 1/8” to 1/8” cable with a 1/4” adapter) (12) OR 1/8” to RCA cable (13)

HOW TO CONNECT

  1. Connect Mixer (11) to Computer Line Input (1.2) with 1/8” to 1/4” cable (12) OR 1/8” to RCA cable (13) where 1/8” end goes into computer Line Input and 1/4” end goes into Mixer Main Out OR RCA end goes into Mixer Tape Out
  2. Connect Mic (4) to Input on Mixer (11) with XLR cable (6)
  3. Connect Instrument (7) to Input on Mixer (11) with 1/4” cable (8)
  4. Connect Headphones (9) to Computer Headphones (1.1)
  5. Go to Sound setup in System Preferences (MAC) / Control Panel (PC) and select Input as Line Input and Output as Headphones.   
  6. If you are live streaming by yourself, go to your browser (Chrome is preferred over Safari) and open Facebook. Go to the profile, page or group you’d like to Live Stream on.

D. For Intermediates with a Computer and an Audio Interface

TECH REQUIREMENTS

  • min 2 channel input Digital Audio Interface (Apogee, Scarlett, M-Audio, USB CODEC, etc) (2)
  • USB cable  (3)
  • 2+ channel input Mixer (11)
  • Microphone (4)
  • Mic Stand (5)
  • XLR cable (6)
  • Instrument (Guitar, Piano, etc) (7)
  • 1/4” cable (8)
  • Headphones (9)
  • 1/8” to 1/4” adapter (10)

HOW TO CONNECT

  1. Connect Audio Interface (2) to Computer (1) with USB cable (3)
  2. Connect Mic (4) to Input on Audio Interface (2) with XLR cable (6)
  3. Connect Instrument (7) to Input on Audio Interface (2) with 1/4” cable (8)
  4. Connect Headphones (9) to Audio Interface (2) PHONES (Use 1/8” to 1/4” adapter (10) if necessary)*
  5. Go to Sound setup in System Preferences (MAC) / Control Panel (PC) and select both Input and Output as Audio Interface (NOT internal microphone for input and NOT headphones for output). Download and install drivers if necessary.  
  6. If you are live streaming by yourself, go to your browser (Chrome is preferred over Safari) and open Facebook. Go to the profile, page or group you’d like to Live Stream on.

QUICK NOTE:  If you have a mixer (11) with built in EFX or more than 2 channels, you can also:

  • Connect your mic and multiple instruments into their respective channels on the mixer (11) and apply the EFX to each.
  • Connect your mixer (11) to your Digital Audio Interface (2) using a 1/4” cable (8) from the Main Out/Phones on the mixer to an input on the Audio Interface

 

E. For Advanced Users with a Computer, Audio Interface, Tracks or Midi

TECH REQUIREMENTS

  • Computer (1)
  • Computer Headphones Port (1.1)
  • min 2 channel input Digital Audio Interface (Apogee, Scarlett, M-Audio, USB CODEC, etc) (2)

  • Microphone (4)
  • Mic Stand (5)

  • 1/8” to 1/4” adapter (10)
  • 1/8” to 1/4” cable (can be created with 1/8” to 1/8” cable with a 1/4” adapter) (12)

HOW TO CONNECT

  1. Connect Audio Interface (2) to Computer (1) with USB cable (3)
  2. Connect Mic (4) to Input on Audio Interface (2) with XLR cable (6)
  3. Connect your computer’s headphone port (1.1) to an Input on your Audio Interface (2) using a 1/8” to 1/8” cable with a 1/4” adapter.
  4. Connect Midi Instrument (13) to Computer (1) with USB cable (3)
  5. Connect Headphones (9) to Audio Interface (2) PHONES (Use 1/8” to 1/4” adapter (10) if necessary)* 
  6. Go to Sound setup in System Preferences (MAC) / Control Panel (PC) and select both Input and Output as Audio Interface (NOT internal microphone for input and NOT headphones for output). Download and install drivers if necessary. 
  7. If you have GarageBand, Logic X or another recording software, open the software and create a project.
  8. Go to Audio Preferences in your software, select input as your Audio Interface (2) and output as Computer Headphone or Built-in Output (1.1)
  9. In your software project, create 2 audio tracks. Assign each track to the  respective input on your audio interface (ie., Track 1 is Input 1, Track 2 is input 2)
  10. Select “Input Monitoring” to be able to hear yourself (In Logic X it is the “I” next to the “R” on each track. In GarageBand , it’s the
  11. Create a Software Instrument track and select your digital instrument. Make sure your instrument is loud. If needed, add a “Gain” plug-in to boost the volume. 
  12. Apply EFX (ie. Reverb, Delay) on your Vocal track
  13. If you have backing tracks you’d like to sing to, create an audio track for each song and import song into track.   
  14. If you are live streaming by yourself, go to your browser (Chrome is preferred over Safari) and open Facebook. Go to the profile, page or group you’d like to Live Stream on.
  15. Click on    . Live Producer should open.   Under Live Video Setup, choose “Use Camera” and allow Facebook access to your camera and mic.  Facebook will recognize your audio system settings as your audio interface.  
  16. Select where and how you’d like to go Live.
  17. Title your live video
  18. Write a post. 
  19. Click “Go Live” and you’re on your way!

* Headphones are only necessary when Live Streaming with others. Headphones are recommended because if you are using a sound system to hear others on the call, their voices and instruments will be picked up by your microphone and create an echo.

 

F. For Intermediates with an iPad/iPhone and Audio Interface

TECH REQUIREMENTS

HOW TO CONNECT

  1. Connect power adapter (16) to Audio Interface (15)
  2. Connect Audio Interface (15) to Multiple USB input hub (18) using USB cable (3)
  3. Connect Multiple USB input hub (18) and iPad or iPhone (14) using Lightning to FEMALE USB adapter (17)
  4. Connect Mic (4) to Input on Audio Interface (15) with XLR cable (6)
  5. Connect Instrument (7) to Input on Audio Interface (15) with 1/4” cable (8) 
  6. Connect Headphones (9) to Audio Interface (15) PHONES (Use 1/8” to 1/4” adapter (10) if necessary)
  7. Open Facebook. Go to the profile, page or group you’d like to Live Stream on.
  8. Click on   .
  9. Add a description
  10. Click “Start Live Video” and you’re on your way!

IMPORTANT NOTE: If your Audio interface does not have a power adapter, do these steps instead

  1. Connect USB Y Cable (19) to Audio Interface (15)
  2. Connect Red USB input on USB Y Cable (19) to Battery Pack Charger (20)
  3. Connect Black USB input on USB Y Cable (19) to Multiple USB input hub (18)
  4. Connect Multiple USB input hub (18) and iPad or iPhone (14) using Lightning to FEMALE USB adapter (17)
  5. Connect Mic (4) to Input on Audio Interface (15) with XLR cable (6)
  6. Connect Instrument (7) to Input on Audio Interface (15) with 1/4” cable (8) 
  7. Connect Headphones (9) to Audio Interface (15) PHONES (Use 1/8” to 1/4” adapter (10) if necessary)
  8. Open Facebook. Go to the profile, page or group you’d like to Live Stream on.
  9. Click on    .
  10. Add a description
  11. Click “Start Live Video” and you’re on your way!

G. For Advanced Users with an iPad/iPhone, Audio Interface and Mixer

  7. Connect Instrument (7) to Input on Mixer (11) with 1/4” cable (8)
  8. Connect Headphones (9) to Audio Interface (15) PHONES (Use 1/8” to 1/4” adapter (10) if necessary)
  9. Open Facebook. Go to the profile, page or group you’d like to Live Stream on.
  10. Click on    .
  11. Add a description
  12. Click “Start Live Video” and you’re on your way!

 

H. For ZOOM Users with any of the above

           

TECH REQUIREMENTS

  • Zoom app
  • Access to iMessages, Email or Messenger to receive invitations

HOW TO CONNECT

  1. Click on Zoom meeting invitation and wait to be admitted into the meeting
  2. When prompted on iPad or iPhone, select “Call using Internet Audio”
  3. When prompted on Computer, select “Join With Computer Audio”
